The perfect pillow supports your neck so that the cervical vertebrae lie in a natural extension of your spine. It’s far from certain that your current pillow will, even if you love it. Since the power of habit is great, you may well have gotten used to sleeping with a thick feather pillow, even if it doesn’t necessarily give your head the best support. It can be difficult to get used to a certain type of pillow, and it might help if you temporarily sleep with two pillows that you can switch between during the night.
The height of the cushion
A pillow that supports correctly is important for you to get the most optimal sleep. At JYSK you will find cushions in three heights – low, medium and high. When choosing the height of the pillow, you must go for a sleeping position where your spine is completely straight. The position you prefer to sleep in will determine what you should choose.
Since
If you sleep on your side, it is particularly important that you choose the right pillow to ensure that your neck vertebrae do not get an unnatural side bend. Sleeping on your side protects your back and neck if you sleep with the right pillow. It can also be a good sleeping position if you suffer from snoring, as the position reduces this tendency.
The ideal pillow for you who prefer to sleep on your side is:
A high pillow that provides support for your head.
A firm pillow, as the filling must not move so that the head falls down.
A plump pillow that fills the space between your head and the mattress.
The back
If you prefer to sleep on your back, your pillow should be low with primary support under the neck. For that purpose, e.g. an ergonomic special pillow in foam or natural latex suitable. Here, an extra support under the neck ensures optimal comfort.
The stomach
If you are one of those who like to sleep on your stomach, the first piece of advice should actually be to try to lie on your side or back instead. Such a sleeping position means that your neck basically gets an unnatural bend backwards. If this is not possible, your pillow should be as flat and soft as possible to reduce the strain on the neck.
The contents of the pillow
Full of nature
Pillows with natural fillings primarily consist of down and feathers, but can also be materials such as wool, silk , linen and kapok . A pillow made of natural filling feels soft and the filling can be easily moved around. It is e.g. an advantage if you sleep alternately on your side and back and need to adjust the height of the pillow.
Synthetic filling
Fiber pillows have synthetic filling. These pillows can be experienced as more elastic than pillows with natural filling. It is often a matter of taste whether you prefer a pillow with natural or synthetic filling.
Special filling
Special filling can e.g. made of memory foam or latex. This type of pillow provides maximum support as the filling is made of more compact materials.
Memory foam is a pressure-relieving foam type that provides minimal counter-pressure on the body, which ensures particularly good conditions for relieving your muscles and joints. With a pillow made of memory foam, you lie ergonomically correct throughout the night, as the foam adapts to your body and sleeping position. The pillows support you all the way from shoulder to neck, so that the blood flows freely and effortlessly, and you avoid tension and get rid of tension headaches.
AIR memory foam is a pressure-relieving foam that is not affected by temperature. This means that the foam remains soft and flexible, even in a cool sleeping environment. Small, air-filled cells in the foam react to your body weight and make the foam shape quickly and precisely to your body.
Finally, you must consider the construction and thus the shape of your pillow. If you want a pillow that can be shaped according to your needs, you must choose a pillow with one chamber. Pillows with multiple chambers offer you different properties depending on their construction. They have two, three or four chambers with different combinations of down and feathers, e.g. soft filling on the outside and a firmer and more supportive core. If you know your preferred sleeping position, you can advantageously choose a shaped pillow. Most often, the pillow is molded and adapted to a specific sleeping position.
