Guide to Mattress Sizes: Choose the Right Size Mattress

Date: June 21, 2023

Category: Bedroom, Guidelines, Sleep

When buying a new mattress, you can choose from a variety of standard sizes. In JYSK, we help you find the size that best suits your needs and sleeping environment.

Which size mattress to choose depends in particular on:

  • Whether you sleep alone or with a partner
  • Whether you move a lot during the night or lie still
  • How much space you have
  • How tall you are

In the following, we review what you need to pay attention to when choosing the size of a mattress.

Standard sizes of mattresses

The ideal size of a mattress depends on who the user is and the space available in the home. The different standard sizes of mattresses are adapted to children or adults and individuals or couples, respectively.

In this chart you can see who and what needs the different standard sizes are suitable for. If the standard sizes do not suit you, you have the option of having a special size mattress made.

What are the mattress sizes suitable for?

How long should a mattress be if you're tall?

Your height influences how long your mattress should be.

The rule of thumb is that your mattress should be at least 20 cm longer than you are.

You should be able to lie outstretched in bed with both arms above your head without your hands touching the headboard or your feet sticking out over the end of your foot.

If you sleep in a bed that is too short, the comfort zones can shift, so you don’t get the support your body needs, whether you sleep on your back or side.

How big a mattress should couples have?

For the best sleep as a couple, you need a bed with ample space. 90 cm per person is a sensible rule of thumb, but a little less can also do it.

When a couple sleeps tightly in a bed, the springs and foam are compressed more than if a single person were lying in bed. It impairs the adaptability of a mattress and has the consequence that you no longer get the support that a mattress should provide.

In JYSK, we therefore recommend a mattress or bed of 160 cm or 180 cm in width for couples.

Which mattress should I choose if I move a lot at night?

If you toss and turn during the night, you’ll need more space to spread out.

The rule of thumb says that one person should have a mattress that is at least 90 cm wide. If you move a lot at night, you may want to choose an even wider mattress.
