When buying a new mattress, there are many factors you need to keep track of: price range, materials, sleeping position and the properties of the mattress are just some of the things that affect your choice of mattress.
On this page, we’ve gathered the most important information you need to find the mattress that can give you a good night’s sleep.
1. What are the characteristics of the different mattresses?
There are many different types of mattresses, and they all have different characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.
In the following, we review different types of mattresses so you can be inspired on which mattress could be right for you.
2. Spring and box spring mattresses
A spring mattress and a box mattress have many of the same characteristics. They both consist of a spring system with one or more layers of springs and a foam padding on top. This combination ensures optimal comfort and adaptation to the contours of the body.
The springs form the core of both a box mattress and a spring mattress. In JYSK we have two types of springs:
Pocket springs move independently of each other and provide your body with optimal support at night. Each spring is encased in small fabric bags that reduce wear and tear and prevent noise from the mattress.
Bonel springs are larger, which means that each spring covers a larger area, which is pressed down at the same time when you lie on the mattress. This means that you will not achieve quite the same support and adaptability as you do with pocket springs.
Benefits of a spring mattress
A spring mattress fits a bed frame or a continental bed
The combination of springs and foam padding provides good support and better sleep. The more springs, the better the support.
If you sleep on your side, a spring mattress provides good support for the deep shoulder zones
A spring mattress can often be turned – and on some models, the foam padding differs in firmness from one side to the other, so you basically get two different mattresses in one mattress. For example, it can be an advantage for couples with different needs for support.
A spring mattress has a high breathability
Disadvantages of a spring mattress
A spring mattress is more mobile than, for example, a foam mattress. You can feel your partner’s movements more easily on a spring mattress than on other types of mattresses.
A spring mattress with bonel springs can make small sounds when moving. In spring mattresses with pocket springs, each spring is encased in small fabric bags and therefore does not make noise.
3. Foam mattresses
A foam mattress consists of several layers of different types of foam. If you choose a mattress with a core of either pure foam, cold foam or memory foam, it provides a good comfort. Memory foam in particular makes a mattress mold to your body.
Several foam mattresses have one firmness on one side and another firmness on the other side – and can therefore be reversed. It allows you to apply a foam mattress according to your sleep needs.
Benefits of a foam mattress
You can get a high degree of adaptability with a foam mattress. Some foam mattresses almost envelop the body.
A foam mattress can be less flexible than a spring mattress, which means that you do not disturb your partner in the same way if you move a lot during the night.
Disadvantages of a foam mattress
The lifespan of a foam mattress is shorter than, for example, a spring mattress.
The foam may lose its elasticity and adaptability over time.
4. What should you pay attention to when choosing a mattress?
When buying a new mattress, it is important to decide which mattress you lie well on. Among other things, you should be aware of the following: The firmness, size and price of the mattress as well as your body weight and the type of bed you are buying a mattress for.
5. How firm should a mattress be?
Your weight and shapes help determine how firm your mattress should be. The rule of thumb is that the more you weigh, the firmer your mattress should be. If you have full-bodied shapes, a mattress with support zones at the hips and shoulders is the right choice for you. A zoned mattress ensures that your shoulders and hips sink correctly into the mattress and that the spine stays straight.
6. The size of a mattress is important
When we talk about mattress size, it’s very much about how many people you sleep in bed and how much space you have in the home.
There are a number of standard sizes you can use as a guideline.
What are mattress sizes suitable for?
Your height also influences the length of your mattress. The rule of thumb is that your mattress should be at least 20 cm longer than you are.
If you sleep on a mattress that is too short, you can lie shifted in relation to the comfort zones, so you do not get the support your body needs, whether you sleep on your back or side
7. The price of a mattress
The price of a mattress can vary quite a bit – from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.
In JYSK we have mattresses in three different price ranges: BASIC, PLUS and GOLD.
8. Choose a right mattress for your sleeping position
Your sleeping position is the position you fall asleep in. Sleeping positions can be divided into three categories:
On the back: Choose a firm or extra firm mattress
On the side: Choose a medium firm mattress with deep shoulder zones
On your stomach: Try a mattress that makes it comfortable to sleep either on your side or back.
9. Which mattress to choose for which bed?
The options are many depending on what type of mattress you prefer to lie on and what type of bed you are looking for a mattress for.
In the chart below you can see which types of mattresses are suitable for which beds:
